Origens: Antes de 1755, era conhecida como Cotovia de Baixo ou área da Alegria, um arrabalde agrícola junto à quinta dos Jesuítas (hoje Jardim Botânico).
Feira da Alegria: Após o terramoto de 1755, a zona acolheu uma etapa da Feira da Ladra, a 'Feira da Alegria', que durou até 1835.
Urbanização: A área desenvolveu-se no século XIX, consolidando-se com o crescimento do Passeio Público. Em 1881, parte da praça foi afetada pela construção da Avenida da Liberdade.
Jardim Alfredo Keil: No final do século XIX, foi criado o jardim central, que recebeu o nome do compositor Alfredo Keil em 1926.
