» About Odemira
The village of Odemira is a small quiet Alentejo town, where the Alentejo tradition and the multicultural influence of the foreign residents who have settled there in recent decades live in communion. This diversity has been fostering the creation of unique and very special dynamics at various levels - cultural, gastronomic, artistic and economic. With a traditional Alentejo urban landscape and cobblestone in the oldest areas of the city, Odemira descends from the top of a hill and extends along the banks of the Mira River, which winds through the territory of the municipality to Vila Nova de Milfontes, where it joins the Atlantic Ocean. Odemira is about 20 km from the beaches of Zambujeira do Mar and Almograve and about 27 km from Vila Nova de Milfontes. The small village of Odemira is the seat of the largest municipality in the country, which has an area of 1720.25 km2 and currently has close to 30 thousand inhabitants (provisional data from the 2021 Census). Founded in 1256, the municipality of Odemira has a great landscape diversity in its territory, extending between the plain, the mountains and the sea. It is in the interior of this municipality that the largest forest area in the country is located, where cork oak, holm oak and eucalyptus predominate.
With 55 km of Atlantic coast integrated in the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vincentina Natural Park, the municipality of Odemira has 12 km of beaches, the best known being those of Malhão, Milfontes, Franquia, Farol, Furnas, Almograve, Zambujeira do Mar and Carvalhal.
